Outdoor Cooking

Time duration: 3 - 4 hours

Age: 10 and up

Learn to cook delicious, nourishing meals outdoors for both backpacking and family camping. You will soon become the person everyone wants to join on camping trips! In this introductory class you will learn about the versatility of Dutch oven and cast-iron cooking. Recipes will be shared, and everyone will get a chance to prepare and sample a variety of dishes and desserts. (If you wish to have other cooking techniques addressed, such as tinfoil cooking or rock cooking, please contact us for further details.) 

Food Preparation: Drying

Time duration: 3 - 4 hours

Age: 10 and up

Dehydrating is the oldest method of food preservation. This beginning class is designed to make you comfortable and familiar with the process of dehydrating. Topics covered include: methods of dehydrating, dehydrating fruits & vegetables, safety issues, dehydrating meats (jerky), equipment & supplies, resources and dehydrating whole meals. 

Canning 101

Time duration: 3 - 4 hours

Age: 12 and up

Canning 101 will introduce you to the principles of canning. It is not designed to be an expert course but will make you comfortable and familiar with the process. We will be focusing on water bath canning. Topics covered include: canning equipment & supplies, safety issues, jelly making, canning fruit and valuable resources.

Fire!

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: 8 and up

Fire is one of the most rewarding skills to master. With it comes hard work and patience but it’s not as hard as some make it out to be. Combination of knowledge, technique and practice will develop competent skills. Students will learn the basics of fire and different methods of fire making through the ages, from the bow drill right up to more modern technology.

Backpacking 101

Time duration: 2 - 3 hours

Age: 10 and up

Have you wondered what should be packed into a backpack and how to fit it inside for comfort and convenience? We will cover essential items to pack for backpacking (as well as what is not necessary), techniques to limit the weight and distribute the bulk of your pack for comfort without jeopardizing safety, how to minimize risk within a group backpacking trip, discuss leave no trace principles, how to dispose of waste properly and discuss factors in choosing an appropriate campsite. This is a hands-on session and participants will have the opportunity to go on a short hike. Feel free to bring your own pack, but you are not required to bring a backpack for this class. 

Map and Compass

Time duration: 3 - 4 hours

Age: 10 and up

The skill of using a map and compass can easily be overlooked as GPS units have become available, but it is unwise to venture in the rugged wilderness without knowledge of how to understand a map with a compass, especially when technology fails. Participants learn how to read and understand map features and markings as they become familiar with using a compass and understand the vital skills of how to navigate through terrain using simply a map and compass.

GPS and Geocaching

Time duration: 3 hours

Age: 10 and up

Learn the basics of GPS and then discover the fun of geocaching. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS–enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Participants will learn to use a GPS as a navigation tool, how to input coordinates and follow those coordinates to a set location and find hidden geocaches. 

Intro to Wilderness Survival

Time duration: 4 hours

Age: We will modify program accordingly to age group.

Participants will not only learn but also practice the seven priorities of survival, what supplies are needed for a basic survival kit, various fire-starting methods and techniques, proper shelter construction with basic and limited supplies, how to effectively signal for help, vital precautions to avoid getting lost and group mindset/dynamics.

Lost Person Prevention

Time duration: 1 – 1 ½ hours

Age: We will modify program accordingly to age group.

Learn simple techniques to avoid getting lost in the wilderness and how to keep track of your family members (including young family members) when venturing into the great outdoors. We will touch on basic lost person mentality and understanding so that you can access the situation and determine the most likely outcome of where a lost person may gravitate. 

Firearm Safety

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: 9 and up

Take charge of your family’s safety and get the basic knowledge and skills to safely handle/store firearms and ammunition in the home. Students will learn actions types, firearm safety rules, how to safely handle long guns/pistols and proper firearm/ammo storage.

Point/Instinctive Shooting

Time duration: 2 - 3 hours

Age: 12 and up

Use your God given gift of point shooting. Point shooting, also known as instinctive shooting, is a method of shooting a firearm quickly and accurately that does not rely on the use of the sights. After a firearm safety debriefing and introduction to point shooting, students will start out utilizing BB guns to shoot at various still targets. As students increase their point shooting skills, they will have the opportunity to challenge themselves by shooting at moving targets starting from the size of a 3-inch disk and decreasing to smaller sizes.  

Gun cleaning

Time duration: 1 – 1 ½ hours

Age: 10 and up 

(Firearms must be unloaded and cased. No ammunition will be allowed.)  You will be guided step by step through the process of safely and thoroughly cleaning a gun. This is a vital skill for anyone who wants to regularly operate a firearm, as proper cleaning will prolong the life of the firearm as well as its quality of shooting. All firearms to be cleaned will be provided.

Intro to Archery

Time duration: 2 - 3 hours 

Age: We recommend ages 8 and up

Learn basic archery techniques for target shooting. The class will also cover types of bows, varieties of arrows and the latest archery equipment. Students will have hands-on instruction and adequate time to practice and refine their shooting skills.

Intro to Trapping

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: We recommend ages 10 and up

Managing furbearer populations is important to the environment. You will learn basic trapping skills, including history and benefits, ethics/responsibilities, equipment, furbearers behavior/ID and how to safely set traps for the specific species you are targeting. Pelts and skulls from several North American furbearers will be available for participants to handle. Habitat, regulations and ethics will also be covered.

Primitive Hunting with Atlatl

Time duration: 5 – 6 hours

Age: 10 and up

Atlatl, or spear-throwing, is a primitive hunting technique that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity than dart-throwing and includes bearing surface which allows the user to store energy during the throw. The atlatl is a long-range hunting tool that can readily impact to projectile speeds of over 93 mph. Students will make their own atlatl and learn the basics in how an atlatl works, hunting techniques and will have time to practice on the range with their atlatl.

Knot-Tying Basics

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: We recommend ages 10 and up

Do you live by the motto, "If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot?" Don't let knot tying scare you! This class will teach a few of the most useful knots out there. We'll review history of knots and cordage, basic vocabulary and functions of knots. You'll get plenty of hands-on time to practice these knots in class. 

Intro to Essential Oils

Time Duration: 1 - 2 hours

Age: 12 and up 

Are you curious about what essential oils are and how they can benefit you? Perhaps you are looking for help with sleep, need to boost your immune system or seek more targeted support. Come and learn with us make your own roller blends to take home. 1 for $6 or 2 for $10 covers supplies (limit 2 rollers per person). 

Wildlife ID

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: We will modify program that is age appropriate

Learn about wildlife habitats, how to identify wildlife, and learn a variety of wildlife calls. You will also pick up tips on techniques to call in turkey and big game such as deer. As time allows, other wildlife calls will be introduced, such as duck and predator calls. Students will make their own homemade wildlife call.

Owl Pellet Dissection

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: 9 and up

Students will learn about food webs, construct a simple food chain and infer the owl’s role in the environment. This class includes naturalist supplies with owl pellets (1 pellet is good for 2 students), a bone identification chart and tools to dissect the owl pellet.

Wood Carving

Time duration: 6 hours

Age: 10 and up

Learn the ancient art of whittling an ordinary piece of wood into a masterpiece. This class will cover types of wood best for carving, wood carving tools/equipment and carving techniques (including carving in the round and relief). Students will have the opportunity to start a woodcarving project in the round under guidance of an instructor and bring home their masterpiece.

Rope Dolls

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: We will modify program that is age appropriate

Learn how Native Americans and early societies made dolls out of rope. Bring out your inner creativity as you discover how rope can be shaped, tied and decorated into beautiful works of art.

Natural Paper Weights

Time duration: 2 hours

Mountain Puzzles

Time duration: 2 hours

Native Rattles

Cordage Making and Braiding

This class will focus on key chains and jewelry.

Rat Trap Cannons

Time duration: 2 - 3 hours

Age: 9 and up

We will discuss the history and struggles of the Great Depression (1930's) and some of the toys that were made during this time, focusing on building materials on the rat trap cannons.

Battle Top Toys

Time duration: 2 hours

Age: 8 and up

We will discuss the history and struggles of the Great Depression (1930's)  and what modern toys were founded from this era in history. We will focus our building time on the battle top toys.

Outdoor Explorer Rendezvous

Time duration: 2 - 3 hours Age: 6 and up 

These are programs that can be for school groups, birthday parties and other organized groups. Outdoor Explorer Rendezvous consist of wildlife conservation education activities that develop the skills needed to become an outdoor explorer specialist. 

· The Hunter (BB gun, archery and tracking game by following a blood trail)

· The Survivor (Lost person prevention, wilderness shelter building and wildlife identification) 

· Be Primitive (Atlatl, throwing sticks and reading wildlife signs)

(Each participant will receive an OER bag supplied with tools to take home to continue their development of becoming an Outdoor Explorer Specialist.)

Team Building

Time duration: 2 - 3 hours Age: 12 and up

Our portable low challenge course and incentives are an excellent choice for groups that wish to build teamwork and unity among their participants. Concepts include communication, trust, cooperation, encouragement and goal setting.
